WADE Elliott is keen to right the wrongs of Vale Park as Cherries bid to get their play-off bid back on track tomorrow (February 5, Vale Park, 3pm kick-off).

Sean O'Driscoll's side travel to League One strugglers Port Vale searching for their first league success since New Year's Day and chasing their first three-point haul from Vale Park in almost 18 years.

Elliott, who has been in scintillating form this season, is targeting the clash for a morale-boosting away win as Cherries look for their first victory on the road since a 1-0 success over Peterborough back in November.

He told the Daily Echo: "We are still confident that we can get ourselves in the play-off positions between now and the end of the season. But we have said the same thing all season - we have a small squad and can't go out and buy people to cover for any injuries.

"But if we have a little bit of luck, we certainly have enough quality within the squad to be right in the mix-up at the end of the season.

"Three points tomorrow would go a long way to giving us that boost to get right back in among the other teams again."

Cherries have not tasted victory at Vale Park since a 2-1 win in March 1987 when then skipper Mark Newson grabbed both goals and current boss Sean O'Driscoll was playing in midfield.

But it has not been a happy hunting ground for Cherries having conceded a late goal in a 2-1 defeat on the first day of last season and suffering defeats in four of their last six visits.

Elliott recalled: "I know our record is not that great at Vale Park. I remember the game on the first day of last season when it was probably the hottest conditions I have ever played in and we lost to a late goal."

He added: "I'd be surprised if we have the same weather this time but it would be nice to correct what happened that day.

"But we beat them 4-0 at our place earlier in the season and I'm sure they will have that in their minds to make sure it doesn't happen again. It is a nice big pitch at Port Vale and usually a nice surface to play on so we can play with confidence."

While recent results have been patchy for Cherries, their performances have been excellent and the winger believes the form will soon translate into more points.

He said: "Sometimes you go through spells of playing well and not picking up the points you deserve. But you also have spells where you don't play so well and scrape some 1-0 wins.

"If we were playing poorly and not picking up points, we'd be worried but if we continue playing the way we have been, we will get the results we deserve. There is certainly no panic."

The 26-year-old also modestly played down his own terrific form so far this campaign pointing to the contribution of his team-mates as the decisive factor in his consistent performances.

He said: "I think it is down to the players around me and that the team has done well this season. A lot of players are in good form and we all know each other's games well now.

"A winger can only be seen to be playing well if he gets a cross in and someone is there to finish it off. I could stick cross after cross in and if there is nobody there for them, it doesn't count for much.

"But I have been pleased with the way I have been playing and the way the team have done. We just need to carry that on."
