CHRISTMAS is coming to Dorchester.

After months of fundraising organisers of the Decorate Dorchester appeal are set unveil what they hope will help light up the county town this festive season.

Supporters of the campaign are taking over the Corn Exchange on Wednesday at 7.30pm to give townsfolk a sneak preview of what is in store for the town.

And those visiting the display will be given the chance to join in the final choice of the designs to go on show this Christmas.

Mark Evans, treasurer of the Decorate Dorchester campaign said: "It's an opportunity for the public to get an idea of what the lights are going to look like.

"The display is before the final order is made so we want to get feedback from the public before we put the order in.

"We are trying to get something classic - with a bit of colour. We are confident that people will like what they see."

Mr Evans said representatives from the campaign would be on hand to explain what they were hoping to achieve with the display over the next few years.

The campaign, which was launched after the Daily Mirror slated Dorchester's Christmas lights as the worst in Britain, has so far raised £23,000, including donations from traders, Dorchester Town Council and West Dorset District Council.

Earlier on Wednesday, all those who have helped to boost the fund are being invited along to a reception in the Corn Exchange.

Among those attending the reception will be all those who joined the 500 club - the club set up for anyone donating £500 or more to the appeal as well as individuals and organisations who helped to boost the fund.

Mr Evans added: "We wanted to say a big thank-you to all those who have helped the appeal.

"Without them we would not be able to carry out the display we have planned."

The Christmas lights will be switched on during Cracker Night, which this year is planned for December 2.
