CALLING all men ... is your engine running smoothly, or is it time to call in the mechanic for some running repairs?

Just like any other piece of machinery, the human body has to be kept fit and healthy to prevent future problems.

But men are notoriously reluctant to see a doctor when any niggles occur - even though the earlier the problem is diagnosed, the better the chances of successful treatment.

Now men in Bournemouth are being offered the chance of a free MOT health check next Friday at St George's Church Hall in Haviland Road, Boscombe.

The event will be opened at 10am by members of Dorset Fire and Rescue Service, who will be given their own checks to make sure they are in peak condition.

Healthcare professionals will be on hand until 4pm, offering basic screening such as blood pressure and cholesterol testing, and offering advice on giving up smoking, losing weight and taking exercise. The day is being staged by the Healthy Living Centre Spring-bourne and Boscombe, which is funded jointly by the Bournemouth Teaching Primary Care Trust and National Lottery and aims to improve the health and well-being of people in those areas.

Project manager Judy Lynas said: "This is the perfect opportunity for every man in the Boscombe area to have an MOT health check and take the first step towards improving their health."
