Dorchester TOWN 1 WEYMOUTH 0 FORMER Wareham Rangers striker Anthony Warrington scored on his Avenue Stadium debut for the Magpies last night to clinch the runner-up spot with a second Two Counties Cup victory of the season over the Terras.

He latched on to a diagonal free-kick from Danny Cann with just five minutes remaining and drilled a sweetly-hit low drive across trialist keeper Simon Evans and into the far corner from 18 yards.

Dorchester fielded mainly their double-chasing reserve side - including only teenager Cann from their current Dr Martens League squad - while the Terras listed just six of the men from the line-up that got a point at Welling on Saturday and also included a couple of trialists.

But while that took a lot of the interest out of the clash, as witnessed by the small handful of diehards who turned out for the watered-down local derby, the rivalry was still evident on the pitch.

Watched by respective bosses Mark Morris and Steve Claridge, both sides kept up relentless, chase and harry tactics and, considering there was little more than pride riding on the outcome, no shortage of biting tackles or whole-hearted effort.

But for the most part, all the huff and puff brought little end product with two stout defences generally holding the upper hand.

Paul Myers in the home goal had his liveliest moment eight minutes in when Martin Underhay's pace took Steve Llewelyn by surprise as he swept into the area. But Myers managed to parry his shot at close range and the Magpies scrambled the ball clear.

At the other end Evans, who plays in the Wessex League for Andover, had to wait until the last minute of the opening half for the opportunity to show his true colours.

Cann's free-kick floated to Dan McDonald on the opposite flank and the Dorset teenager's superbly struck, first-time effort was acrobatically turned over the bar by Evans.

Exchanges continued at 100mph after the break and as the Terras began to ask more questions of the home defence, John Lamb and Underhay were denied by timely blocks from Llewelyn, Steve Gilbert and James Wilson.

Substitute John Waldock, introduced midway through the first half for an injured Kevin Gill, was desperately unlucky to see his 65th minute curler beat Myers only to bounce back into play off

the inside of the upright and Mark Robinson's eight-yard header was well held by the diving keeper.

However the Magpies lasted the pace well and Warrington rattled his shot high over the bar after a neat set-up by Magpies impressive 16-year-old Adam Symes. Then Terras' Steve Orchard sent a back header

past his own keeper, and Evans had to sprint ten yards back towards his goal to gather near the line with Warrington in pursuit.

Magpies boss Mark Morris said he had been very impressed by Phil Simkin's young side.

"There is some excellent young talent there and if we are patient and bring them along in the right way it bodes very well for the future of the club," he said.

Said Simkin: "They had quite a bit more experience in their side than we did and I was delighted with our performance."
