RULING parties suffered a council tax backlash last night as Liberal Democrats in Poole and Conservatives in Bournemouth were turfed out of office by voters.

Twelve years of Liberal Democrat rule came to an end in Poole with the controversial park-and-ride scheme and the Quay redevelopment also figuring high on the list of campaign issues.

The new Tory leadership immediately hinted at major changes including reviewing the plans for a second town bridge. Leader Cllr Ann Stribley warned: "There are some tough and difficult decisions to be made."

In Bournemouth the incumbent Conservatives received a thumping, picking up just 16 seats against the Liberal Democrats 33.

In both towns the high level of council tax increases in the past year was pinpointed as one of the key factors for the defeats.

There was little cheer for Labour in Bournemouth - three sitting councillors in one ward were soundly beaten. And the new political make-up could mean an eleventh hour reprieve for the Winter Gardens, at least if the mayor-elect Anne Rey has her way.

Liberal Democrat deputy leader Richard Smith claimed the town's budget was in "an awful situation". He said the public had lost confidence in the Conservatives.

However, the Tories had something to celebrate in Christchurch taking 14 of the 24 seats and retaining their grip on power as they did in East Dorset. The Liberal Democrats made gains in Purbeck.
