LYME councillors are confident that their intention to use land near the former cadet hut will proceed, despite the fact that Magna Housing has not so far given the scheme its blessing.

The council wants to put up two storage huts and provide a staff parking facility on the site.

Users of the hut do not object. But three letters of objection have been received from nearby housing tenants, prompting Magna Housing to send the town council a holding letter while it considers them.

Town clerk Michael Lewis told the recreations committee on Wednesday that the council's solicitor had advised that the provision of two huts within the compound and the parking spaces did not contravene a covenant stipulating amenity use.

Concerns had been expressed about traffic movement, but this would not be greatly increased by staff who would generally park their vehicles at the start of work and take them at the end of the day.

The roadway to the hut was already used by tenants driving to their garages. Another claim was that increased usage of the area would reduce the value of properties, but this was difficult to prove.

"We will just have to wait on Magna," said Coun Owen Lovell when the committee approved of the clerk's actions.
