FLY-HALF Daffyd Williams was the star of the show as Ellingham and Ringwood inflicted further misery on Hampshire Two basement boys Portcastrians with a 31-6 victory.

Williams landed 21 out of Ellingham's 31 point haul, kicking four penalties, two conversions and grabbing a second-half try to rack up their fifth league win of the campaign and stay hot of the heels of top two Isle of Wight and Fawley.

It was the hosts who took the initiative early on landing a penalty and although Ellingham were back on level terms shortly after via the boot of Williams, Portcast-rians again grabbed another three points.

Ellingham began to move up a gear and after Portcastrians repeatedly killed the ball in rucks just short of the try line, the New Foresters were awarded a penalty try, which Williams duly converted for a four-point half-time advantage.

And after club captain Dick Birch had read the riot act during the break, the visitors got their title charge firmly back on track with a display of purposeful and at times scintillating rugby.

Williams ran over a superb individual try, adding the conversion and a further three penalties, before a well-worked team move saw full-back Dave Brigs-tocke pick a beautiful running line on a crash ball to go over in the corner.

Birch said: "Although I wasn't happy with our first-half performance, I am very pleased with the result.

"I was particularly impressed with our younger less experienced players who put in some great performances. Both Dave Robertson and Andrew Dare had good games in the back row and clearly our outside-half Daffyd Williams played superbly.

"I was also pleased with our scrum-half Rob Mitchell and our two replacements Chris Rossiter and Jumper Collins both played well in the second-half."

Ellingham travel to Fleet in the league on Saturday.

Swanage and Wareham moved to the head of the Powergen South West and East Division after their 22-3 drubbing of bottom side Amersham and Chiltern.

With previous leaders Oxford Harlequins suffering their first defeat of the campaign at third-placed Maidenhead, Swans edged ahead narrowly on points difference although Harlequins do still have a game in hand.

Despite Amersham's John Cornish kicking the hosts into a three-point lead, Swans hit back when second row Andy Walbrin went down the blindside to score in the corner.

And with the wind in their favour after the break, Swans continued to exert their authority on the game as they were firstly awarded a penalty try, which Phil Graves converted, before Graves extended their lead with a penalty following an infringement on Barry Walton.

Graves then completed an industrious afternoon's work going over for a 74th minute try and landing the resultant conversion.

Guy Spencer took his season's tally to 10 tries in seven games as Bournemouth rattled up a 15-6 Southern Counties South victory over Wootton Bassett at Chapel Gate.

Steve Cunningham opened the scoring for the visitors after 23 minutes but Spencer was on hand to swing the match back in the Lions' favour outstripping the Woot-ton winger to score wide on the left. In exactly the same pattern as the first-half Cunningham kicked Wootton back into the lead before Spencer's desperate stretch and touchdown saw him record his 43rd career try for Bournemouth, a club record.

The Lions then seized the initiative as Dan Cawley accelerated away from a last-ditch tackle to crash home under the posts.

Oakmeadians stay top thanks to their 19-11 win at Devizes. Joe Korvus and Tim Flower tries helped Oaks into a healthy lead but the home side continued to graft and the leaders needed a converted try late on to guarantee maximum points.

Fleet endured a fruitless trip to Lytchett Minster in Hampshire Two as they went down 12-5. Despite conceding a try early in the second period, the Manor Men hit back through Oggy Wayman and Daryl Presdee who gave the hosts a 7-5 lead.

And when prop Dean Dennett crossed the line for the decisive try, Lytchett's comeback was complete.

Despite missing six first-team regulars, Ver-wood beat an Alresford second string 32-26 in a hastily arranged fixture at Potterne Park.

Alresford took a 26-10 half-time lead with Tim Wynn and Gareth Smith scoring for Verwood.

After the interval, Verwood pegged back the visitors with Ben Stocken (two), Smith, and Brendan Murphy chalking up tries to seal an impressive home victory.
