THE Healthy Living Project, aimed at improving lifestyles in Weymouth and Portland, was hailed a success today.

More than 400 people have seen improvements to their health as a result of starting a programme through the project's exercise referral scheme.

Project leaders say some people have seen significant, life-changing benefits.

They include 59-year-old mother-of-three Margaret Wareham, of Park Street, Weymouth, who said the scheme had made a world of difference.

Margaret, who quit smoking in January after 40 years and had high blood pressure, said: "I was referred to the exercise referral scheme by my doctor who thought my health was suffering from lack of exercise.

"I hadn't done any exercise for years but when I had my initial health check the staff were so friendly and encouraging that I didn't feel intimidated or silly about doing exercise." Since the end of August Margaret has been visiting the gym twice a week and swimming once a week and to date she has lost 10lbs.

She added: "Over time, I have got to know lots of people who, like me, had been referred and have enjoyed keeping fit. After three months of doing regular exercise, I feel fantastic.

"I have lost weight, have loads more energy and have found that I love exercising.

"It has made such a difference to my life."

The exercise referral scheme is suitable for anyone who needs to incorporate exercise into their life but needs some support, encouragement and motivation to get started.

The scheme operates at Weymouth swimming pool, Weymouth Sports Centre and the YMCA on Portland.

Healthy Living Project manager Debra Pattinson said: "People can only get on the scheme by being referred to it by their GP or practice nurse.

"Once on it they will be given a health check and a personal exercise programme. They will also be entitled to discounted rates at participating venues."

She added: "Research has shown that doing exercise just three times a week has a significant impact on people's health."
