WHIZZ kid Steven Smith from Dorchester has done the double after being named Pet Protector of the Year for the second time.

The schoolboy scooped the People's Dispensary for Sick Animals (PDSA) title in successive years after donating hundreds of items to the charity.

Now 14-year-old Steven, who lives at Poundbury, has won a family trip to the famous Crufts dog show in Birmingham next March.

Dad Barry Smith said: "We are very proud of Steven.

"He has done brilliantly to win the PDSA title for the second year running. He amassed 37,000 points with points awarded for money raised and items donated to the local shop."

He added: "It is really down to his hard work and the items donated for him to take to the PDSA shop."

Thomas Hardye School pupil Steven lives with dad Barry, mum Debbie and sister Kelly in Middlemarsh Street at Poundbury.

The former Dorchester Middle School pupil won the Pet Protector of the Year title for the first time last year when he notched up 31,000 points.

He beat off hundreds of youngsters to claim the titles in 2001 and 2002.

Steven, who was named Dorchester Carnival's Hero of the Year in 2001, is heavily involved in Young Enterprise at the school.

His sister Kelly has also achieved success with Young Enterprise on trips abroad and the pair's parents are involved with the Dorchester Moose charity.

Mr Smith said: "The Crufts trip is in March when the Young Enterprise groups are holding their trade fairs, so we will have to think of a way around it."

Steven decided to join the PDSA club in March 2001 after family cat Lucky was hit by a car.

The PDSA helps sick animals at its clinics but also runs schemes where members can get cheap or free veterinary treatment for pets.
