Warner Bros expands its cult TV cartoon series into a breezy and entertaining big-screen romp that should play well at half term.

Fans of the show will undoubtedly get more out of The Powerpuff Girls Movie than newcomers, but there's plenty to enjoy.

Professor Utonium (Tom Kane) hopes to create perfect little girls by following the instructions of the popular nursery rhyme, mixing sugar and spice and all things nice.

Unfortunately, he accidentally adds mysterious Chemical X to the brew, which radically alters the genetic make-up of his three pint-sized creations.

Blossom (voiced by Cathy Cavadini), Bubbles (Tara Strong) and Buttercup (EG Daily) look like any other little girls: Bright eyed, sweet-natured and prone to fits of giggles.

However, the trio also possess superhuman strength, infra-red vision and the ability to fly.

The other inhabitants of Townsville are frightened of the girls' strange powers and quickly ostracise them, at the behest of the bumbling mayor (Tom Kenny).

They soon change their opinions when Professor Utonium's disgraced former assistant Mojo Jojo (Roger L Jackson) steals Chemical X to make an army of evil apes to take over the world, and that's when Blossom, Bubbles and Buttercup fly into action, battling against the forces of evil, for the good of all, er, mankind.

The animation is crisp and colourful... go girls!
