SOME of this area's most dynamic entrepreneurs are also among its most modest, say organisers of the Echo-backed Dorset Business Awards.

And that can make the hunt for Dorset's Lester Aldridge Business Person of the Year one of the most challenging of the four award categories.

Lester Aldridge managing partner and lead judge of the category Roger Woolley is appealing for anyone in business to nominate individuals who they believe fit the criteria.

"We often find these leading lights keep a relatively low profile so it is important that you put them forward," he said.

"They are not only contributing to their own businesses, but to the economy of the county as a whole and should be acknowledged for doing so.

"If you are aware of someone whose achievements deserve recognition, please tell us."

Bournemouth-based regional law firm Lester Aldridge was one of the first sponsors of the Dorset Business Awards and it has seen an impressive roll of honour over the past eight years.

Past winners include Bath Travel's Stephen Bath; Sheila and David Ryan, proprietors of Bistro on the Beach and Neil Goulden from Allied Leisure.

Last year's winner was Quays Group chief executive Peter Mills for his vision and drive in the regeneration of Poole Quay, and the evolution from the original Poole Pottery factory to a £30 million redevelopment of luxury apartments, retail and restaurants.

Mr Mills said: "To be awarded Business Person of the Year has to be a highlight in anyone's career. As a business person you tend to work towards your own objectives, following your vision, without expecting anyone outside to value your activities.

"To receive this accolade was a demonstration of support from business throughout the county, and can only makes you strive harder and aim yet higher.

"I am honoured to have been one of the eight past winners and would wholly recommend the accolade. The very best of luck to all the 2002 entrants."

As part of his award, Mr Mills returned to host a workshop for 60 young entrepreneurs yesterday.

He was talking to dynamic students tipped to be the future of Dorset business as part of the Young Enterprise project.

The other three Echo-supported award categories are the:

KPMG Company of the Year

IoD Business in the Community Award, sponsored by LSC Bournemouth, Dorset & Poole

DCCI International Award, sponsored by Business Link Wessex

Entry forms for the four awards are available from Lester Aldridge, 01202 786161 - closing date for entries is October 25.
