Hampshire League Division One

WEYMOUTH 6

PETERSFIELD 1

Weymouth trounced Petersfield with an elite performance to make it two league wins out of two at Redlands.

And three goals from Ed Dorey was enough to send them top of Hampshire Division One on goal difference from Southampton.

In an incident-packed match, the Seasiders played the last quarter with nine men following a red card for Andy Gallivan and a deserved yellow for a petulant Fergus Grimes.

But the game was already won inside the first ten minutes when the hosts netted three times without reply.

First, Dorey deflected home from a short corner in the opening attack of the half.

Next, Patrick May hit a stunning reverse stick strike into the roof of the net from an acute angle.

And thirdly Ed Long provided a gentle finish to a Weymouth move that had spanned the length of the pitch.

The opposition did not know what had hit them.

But captain Mike Baker still had to make his second successive penalty flick save to maintain the advantage.

Crucially for the home team, they added a fourth just before the interval to cement their dominance on proceedings.

Gallivan slipped a ball inside the D for Dave Chubb to cross at pace and Nick Chubb to hit the rebound home past a hapless keeper.

The Seasiders continued their strong form straight into the second half.

Dorey added his second of the day at another short corner and completed a deserved hat-trick soon after when he fired home from close range.

With the tie won, Gallivan soured his return to the Weymouth cause after a year playing in Australia when he followed through with a tackle which was adjudged as serious foul play.

A wound-up Grimes was then sin-binned after not being able to control his temper. Petersfield managed a late consolation strike to

deny man-of-the-match Jim Henderson and the rest of the defence a clean sheet.

Skipper Baker was delighted to see his side go top of the league.

"We played some really incisive hockey and it is fantastic to be sitting at the top of the pile."

He added: "We must keep training hard and work at our discipline and the rewards will continue to come."
