THE library of the future virtually became a reality when youngsters were wired up to a new project.

With the help of a £5,000 grant from South West Arts and the creative skills of artists in residence Sally Watkins and Richard Tomlinson the young people produced their own virtual library.

The project was initiated by the 200-strong Friends of Weymouth Library (FOWL) which secured the funding from South West Art's participation fund. The aim was to encourage local young people, mostly seconded from the Tides youth centre, to produce a series of digital images around the theme of what they would like to see as their ideal library of the future.

The result is Moving On, a video installation which is now on show to the public at Weymouth library,

Included in the video are interviews with the young people where they express their opinions about what the library means to them.

Doug Hollings, chairman of FOWL, said: "It was a worthwhile project and I think the young people got a lot out of it.

"We're now considering incorporating some of their ideas and suggestions into the library but we have to be careful not to alienate other user- groups. A strong message coming out of the project was that people are not allowed to make a noise in the library and young people find that intimidating."
