THOUSANDS of people are expected to visit the replica ship HM Bark Endeavour when she docks in Weymouth Harbour.

Between 70 and 80 volunteers have offered to guide members of the public and school parties around the floating museum, and their first training session has now taken place.

Weymouth and Portland Borough Council marketing and press officer Jacqui Gisborne said: "We were overwhelmed with the number of people who volunteered to be guides for Endeavour's stay.

"They will be working on board Endeavour throughout the public days, which are from Saturday, September 28 to Sunday, October 6.

"Some of the volunteers will be working as ship keepers, which means they will be staying on the ship overnight.

"It is a fantastic coup for us to attract a vessel of this calibre and it is a credit to Weymouth Harbour that we were approached to accommodate Endeavour."

The volunteer co-ordinator, Mark Kemmis-Betty, said: "We are all very excited about the vessel arriving."
