WARRIORS from the past turned back the clock a couple of millennia on the outskirts of the New Forest over the weekend.

Visitors to the Rockbourne Roman Villa, near Fordingbridge, saw ancient history brought to life in loud, colourful style as the area came under Imp-erial rule once more.

Re-enactment specialists Legio II Augusta marched back into business to demonstrate the fearsome military might of the Roman army, the world's supreme conquering force for several centuries.

They showcased battle manoeuvres, drills and displays of cavalry and weaponry dressed in full military regalia, while also re-creating the bloodthirsty and brutal battles for survival in the gladiatorial arena.

But their culture was not all about combat, and visitors also had the chance to see the civilian benefits brought to Britain by Roman rule, with talks and demonstrations covering subjects such as fashion, cosmetics, food and law.

A new street scene was also introduced by the group this year, reflecting daily life of the time, and organisers said interest in the annual event was as healthy as ever.

"The success of the film Gladiator and documentary programmes such as Time Team have definitely helped boost interest in arch-aeology and history over the last couple of years, and this is the place for people to see it for themselves," said spokeswoman Hilary Marshall.
