WIMBORNE carried off the Dorset triples title after a blitz of 16 shots in four ends virtually settled the county final at Dorchester.

Their trio of Steve Hann, Ken Hann (Steve's father) and skip Doug Rumble trailed 11-6 at nine ends until taking charge with scores of five, four, four and three over successive ends to dash 22-11 in front.

That surge deflated their Wellworthy opponents Roy Burnett, Brian Durant and skip Wayne Garnett and Wimborne went on to seal a 25-13 victory. Burnett and Garnett had better luck in a high-quality pairs final where they beat Gary Pick and Pete Willats of Alexandra Park 19-15. Trailing 6-0 after three ends, Pick and Willats levelled on 6-6 following the fifth. The Alexandra pair fell 11-6 behind again but once more fought back to make it 13-13 by the 15th.

However, the turning point came when Pick and Willats dropped a three and a single on the 19th and 20th ends to go 19-14 down - and this time there was no time to mount a comeback as Wellworthy lifted the trophy 19-15.

Alexandra Park also had to be content with the runners-up spot in the fours where Vern Singleton, Jim Cotton, Mike Stapleton and skip Eric Ames lost 23-11 to Ken Dolbear, Tony Sargent, Graham Reed and Syd Brice of Wellworthy.

For the first seven ends it was a tight contest with Wellworthy edging 6-4 ahead but the next end saw telling deliveries from Reed and Brice give the Weymouth club a five after Alexandra Park had been holding two.

That widened the gap to 11-4 as the rain set in and though Ames' men cut the margin by three shots over the next two ends, Wellworthy took command romping 21-10 in front. The final margin was 23-11 By his own admission, Ron Blake was not at the singles final. After bowling superbly at Broadstone to qualify for the nationals at Worthing, the Branksome Park stalwart could not find his length and line at Dorchester.

By contrast Barry Patterson adapted more easily and consequently the Greenhill man wrapped up the title with a 21-6 triumph.

The county winners and runners-up all qualified for the English BA Championships which are being held this week and next week at Worthing.

Poole Park will be the venue for the Dorset Cup final between Dorchester and Wellworthy on September 2 (2.30).
