As expected, Cherries boss Sean O'Driscoll made wholesale changes to his starting line up following Tuesday's LDV Vans Trophy first round victory over Dover Athletic.

Only Eddie Howe and Karl Broadhurst kept their places as O'Driscoll made nine alterations which included a return for captain Steve Fletcher who shook off a hamstring injury and passed a late fitness test.

And with Jermain Defoe and Warren Cummings both cup-tied, Hayter was asked to partner Fletcher in the Cherries attack while Steve Purches switched to left back and Broadhurst slotted in at right back.

Fletcher was quickly in the action and headed across from Broadhurst just wide of the post in the opening 60 seconds.

Ian King struck a 20-yard free kick straight at the Cherries wall after eight minutes before James Hayter went close at the other end when he turned his marker before firing straight at Borough goalkeeper Chris MacKenzie.

Wade Elliott then went close for Cherries when he met Claus Jorgensen's centre but headed the ball inches over the cross bar.

It was the last time Jorgensen would make a contribution because after 33 minutes he received a kick in the face from Terry Angus and had to be substituted. The Dane left the pitch with blood pouring from his face.

The blow of losing him was softened somewhat when Cherries took the lead from the resultant free kick after Richard Hughes stepped forward and rammed the ball home from 20 yards.
