STUDENTS and staff were celebrating after winning honours at the annual awards ceremony at Weymouth College.

More than 40 students stepped up to collect their prizes at the campus on Cranford Avenue.

But there were also accolades for outstanding members of staff in the college’s newly-introduced STAR Awards.

The gongs were aimed at recognising the dedication and expertise of the staff for making a significant contribution to improving the skill levels of young people and adult learners.

Principal Sue Moore said: “It has been an exceptional year for our students with the most excellent set of results for Weymouth College.

“This is the first time that we have also recognised staff at our annual awards ceremony and they are very well deserved. We would also like to thanks our award sponsors for their continued support.”

The awards ceremony – recognising achievements of 2009 – was held after being postponed because of snow in January this year.

Dorset County Council 2012 manager Gary Fooks was the guest speaker at the ceremony and praised award winners.

He said: “It is now 849 days until the start of the 2012 Games and Weymouth College has already embedded the Olympic and Paralympic values into everything it does.

“But the values of excellence, inspiration and determination are particularly present with the award winners.”

Winners included the Dorset Echo-sponsored Media Student of the Year Russell Sollis and stone mason Oliver Clack, who has received international recognition for this achievements.

Staff winners included English lecturer Kieron Dalton, art and design technician Sandra Stalker, Ann Lam from learner support, learning team leader Lynsey Melhuish, learning team leader Mike Sharples, catering lecturer Leonie Monaghan, coffee shop supervisor and trainer Gill Symes and the stonemasonry team of Darren Lawrence, Richard Mortimer and Dave Good.
