THE Weymouth Transport Package is a shambolic disaster waiting to happen.

Reasoning appears to be out the window.

Authorities (whoever they are) are intent on deliberately spending the authorised government funding by taking away the only thing in Weymouth which keeps traffic flowing as best as possible – the roundabouts – and replacing them with free car parking or as they call them ‘intelligent traffic lights’.

Roundabouts work – fact! They keep the traffic flowing. Traffic lights never have and never can keep traffic flowing.

However, retain the roundabouts and stagger the pedestrian crossings as planned in the Weymouth Transport Package and it may just assist the traffic flow a little to everybody’s benefit.

If the existing ‘intelligent’ traffic lights installed at the Chickerell Link Road in January 2006 are an example of what is to come then delays will be with us forever.

In the Echo of June 1 Matthew Piles says that his department does listen to people’s concerns and worries.

In that case may I inquire as to why, after so many comments and concerns have been raised regarding the lights at each end of Chickerell Link Road, they are still as dangerous as when they were first installed four years ago.

Why not try changing to roundabouts at the junction of this road and see which works best before implementing all these changes in Weymouth town centre.

One unworkable example is the ‘Toy Town’ plan of five lanes of traffic on the lower end of Boot Hill.

It’s a potential accident zone, given buses, lorries, cars and caravans, tippers, coaches and bicycles will all be struggling for room.

On a brighter note we will have permanent Christmas lights, even if their colour will be predominantly red.
