VANDALS caused thousands of pounds worth of damage as they went on a wrecking spree in a Weymouth street.

The yobs smashed garage windows and security lights, tore up a garage roof and caused serious damage to a car and a caravan during the overnight raid in Goldcroft Avenue.

Police are now appealing for anyone who witnessed the crimes or knows anything about the attacks to come forward.

Among the victims were John and Sue Baker, who said they were devastated after waking up the morning after the raid to find their new caravan and car had been damaged.

Retired factory maintenance engineer Mr Baker, 69, said: “We were broken into in the early hours of the morning.

“Whoever it was had climbed into our garden over a six foot high wall.

“They broke four windows on the caravan and damaged the side of it.

“They also broke into my workshop garage and smashed the windows of our Vauxhall Corsa inside it as well as the driver’s side mirror and rear lights.

“They also caused a lot of damage and dents to the car’s bodywork. We reported it to the police the next morning.”

He added: “I estimate the damage to the caravan is around £2,000 and obviously Sue and I were totally devastated. We haven’t long had it and we’ve only been out in it about four times.

“It cost us £13,000 and it was targeted in an act of mindless vandalism. We couldn’t believe that such damage could be caused.

“The police have taken some things away from the crime scene for analysis but they have not come back with any results yet.”

A Dorset Police spokesman confirmed Mr and Mrs Baker’s caravan and car windows were smashed in the overnight raid, which happened in the early hours of Saturday, December 4.

The officer said another resident in Goldcroft Avenue had their security lights and a glass door pane in a detached garage smashed.

Another victim had the roof of their detached garage vandalised when the raiders tore off an asbestos sheet.

The police spokesman added that nothing was stolen during any of the break-ins.
