Armed robbery suspect Colin Douglas has now been charged with the burglary and arson of a Dorchester recycling warehouse to add to the list of offences he already faces.

Police revealed the 25-year-old was due in court to face new charges of robbing Portland taxi driver Derrick Thorner and a string of other offences on top of charges including the robbery of £28,056 from a Weymouth post office.

And when Douglas appeared from custody at Bournemouth Magistrates Court he also faced the new charge of the burglary of Dorchester Waste Paper at the Casterbridge Trading Estate and setting light to and destroying the building.

Appearing relaxed but straight-faced throughout his 12-minute court appearance Douglas confirmed his name and date of birth and when asked his address he said “no address”.

Douglas wore a grey jumper, blue T-shirt and bright green trousers and denied all the charges read out to him.

He was charged with the robbery of Derrick Thorner on February 25 on Portland of £180 cash, a mobile phone, iPhone, car key, satnav, accessory bag, wallet, cash card and cash and credit cards.

He was charged with committing that robbery while in possession of a handgun and assaulting and unlawfully imprisoning Mr Thorner and detaining him against his will.

Douglas was charged with the burglary of a house in Clearmount Road, Weymouth and stealing clothing, footwear, jewellery, a bank card and a camcorder between February 19 and 22 and the burglary of Boots in Portland Road in Weymouth to steal prescription drugs between February 11 and 15.

He is charged with stealing the keys to a Toyota Hilux owned by Jeffrey Buckland on February 22 and taking the vehicle.

Douglas is charged with the burglary of Dorchester Waste Paper on February 20 and stealing a chainsaw, tools and other items including £17 cash before committing arson and destroying by fire the building of the business owned by Phillip Roberts.

The suspect last appeared in court on March 14 in Dorchester but up until now has not been given the chance to enter any pleas.

Douglas was charged with the robbery of the Abbotsbury Road post office on March 2 while in the possession of a rifle. He was also charged with driving a Nissan Almera dangerously on Benville Road and using a firearm with intent to resist arrest on that day.

Douglas is also charged with aggravated vehicle taking while in possession of a firearm in relation to a Saab 9-3 Convertible and driving it dangerously on Lynch Road – also on March 2.

He has also been charged with possession of a firearm and attempting to make use of a firearm – a semi-automatic rifle – on March 4.

Douglas is next due to appear at Weymouth Magistrates court on Wednesday. He has been told he must appear there for the Boots, Dorchester Waste Paper and Toyota Hilux offences to be committed to crown court.

Douglas, who was remanded in custody, was also told to appear at Bournemouth Crown Court on Thursday, with district Judge Roger House telling him this may be changed to Dorchester Crown Court if it is open.
