I was looking forward to the weekend – yacht racing wasn’t something I had come across yet and to be privileged to see the racing close up (as well as working) was a great experience.

I had a sneaky look on ebay before I went and one of these yachts, a Sigma 38, second hand was in the region of £52,000. Needless to say, I didn’t put a bid in!

I was crewing on a RIB this weekend and we were responsible for laying the buoys which the boats would race around. On the face of it, it may sound like an easy job, but it has to be done accurately using GPS otherwise the yachts heading out into Weymouth Bay wouldn’t be able to find their race course!

We had two really good days of racing and it was fun to have the freedom of the bay – a change from being in the harbour. Sadly, on Monday, despite laying part of the course, the weather got the better of the racing as the wind was just too strong. So we then set about lifting the buoy weights up again and dismantled the course.

After a short debrief, I started to walk back to Victoria Square in order to get the bus. There I found the Revive Portland team setting up their Mayday Event so I decided to stop on and help with their day.

After a good start sadly this was not to be either as before long the heavens opened and we had torrential rain, hail and even thunder and lighting! So we gradually packed things away by which time it was time for me to head back to the academy for my windsurfing session!

This was the part of the day when the weather didn’t matter and the wind was welcome. I bombed across the harbour – it was my first week in a harness with toe straps, I really did fly – and fly off!

I am now looking ahead to the weekend when I will be cutting the ribbon at the official opening of the Lodmoor Green Gym at Lodmoor Country Park. The fun starts at 2pm and everyone is welcome.
