A CAMPAIGNER is calling on people to join him in the fight to bring back roundabouts on Weymouth’s roads.

Ian Brooke wants to drum up support for a campaign to reinstate the roundabouts in town that were removed and replaced with traffic lights as part of the Weymouth Transport Package.

He has designed a ‘Give Us Back Our Roundabouts’ logo and has had it printed on a sign for his car and a T-shirt.

Mr Brooke, 68, of Southill, who is a former president of the town’s chamber of commerce, plans to distribute car stickers and T-shirts to motorists who wish to get behind the campaign.

He said: “I’ve had the poster on display in my car and I haven’t had any negative reactions.

“People have mostly been asking: ‘Can I have some of these for my car?’ “I’m going to print them off and let people have them if they want them.”

Retired photographer Mr Brooke based his campaign logo on the five Olympic rings.

He said: “I wanted to use the message ‘Stop’ in red with the same design as the Olympic rings.

“We’ve got these traffic lights because of these so-called spectators who are coming in to watch the Olympics.

“The council has got to admit these are not working.

“It’s not using a sledgehammer to crack a nut – it’s using a bulldozer.”

Mr Brooke has lived in Weymouth for 39 years.

He said: “This is a change for the worse.

“These traffic lights have done nothing for congestion at all.

“What will put the tin hat on it is the summer season, if we get the normal amount of traffic going to Portland over the summer, I can see the traffic grinding to a halt.

“They’ve got to get back to a roundabout system. I’m pretty sure it will happen, it’s a matter of time.”
