BUDDING cake makers in Weymouth will be challenged to a bake off this month with the town’s mayor.

Mayor, Councillor Graham Winter, and Mayoress Mrs Mary Jordan-Winter will be visiting YOU’s Pottery Lane Service on Wednesday to settle a long-standing dispute between young people and staff – who bakes the best cake?

The bake off idea is the brainchild of YOU Manager, Andy Cosma who thought young people would welcome the chance of being king of the cakes.

Resident Laura Sanderson said: “I’ve been trialling a number of different cakes with staff.

“I’m feeling confident but it sounds like there’s going to be some tough competition out there.”

Pottery Lane Services provide support to vulnerable young people living in Dorset by providing life skills training including confidence building and cooking to people from often complex backgrounds.

The centre recently had a visit from celebrity chef Lesley Waters to promote the bake-off event.

Appropriately named staff member Sally Cake said: “I don’t mean to brag about my baking skills but it won’t be a difficult choice for the Mayor and Mayoress I’m sure.

“I’m looking forward to seeing everyone’s entries on the day.”

During the event teams and individuals, including residents and staff, will be putting forward their best baking achievements.

Entrants from services across Dorset, including services from Bridport, Weymouth, Dorchester and Sherborne are all expected to enter.

Deputy Manager, Jacqui Redfern said: “Having the Mayor of Weymouth and Portland judge the competition is, quite literally, the icing on the cake.

“We work really hard to improve links with the borough and promote the independence of the young people who use our services. “This is a wonderful way to bring everyone together for a fun and very tasty event.”
