Portland children are gearing up for a sea-themed carnival procession on the island as part of the borough’s Spirit of the Sea festival.

The 2011 Big Grove Summer Festival is just around the corner and plans are well under way for a fun packed event this year.

Back on the original Oval site off Grove Road, on Saturday, July 9, the festival will incorporate a Mini Moving Tides procession as part of its Spirit of the Sea collaboration, with children from all across the island participating in this exciting addition to the festival programme.

Last month youngsters from Grove Infant School and Southwell Primary School enjoyed a special arts week, which encompassed visits to the beach as well as mask and costume making in preparation for the festival.

Pupils will be showing off their designs to the public at the Big Grove Summer Festival.

Grove headteacher Jane Hurdiss said: “Most of the children will use the costumes again, some of the older ones from Southwell Primary School may also take part in the bigger Moving Tides children’s procession in Weymouth.

“The younger ones will join with the Big Grove’s Mini Moving Tides procession on Portland.”

Organiser Sarah Whiteside said: “The event will be officially opened by Portland town crier, Stuart Cave, who will be on hand throughout the day to entertain the crowds.

“The Stomping Goats will be headlining a fantastic line up of Live Music across 2 stages, with a showcase from the Portland Rocks music project on the 2nd Stage in the afternoon.

“There will be the usual six-a-side football tournament and a new tug-of-war competition.

“Teams are wanted for this new competition, so please get in touch if you would like to enter.”

Other new additions include a pets’ corner, courtesy of Fancys Farm, donkey rides, a Punch and Judy show and a cream teas tent.

Highlights will also include a showcase by members of the Portland Rocks music project, open mic sessions, Royal Manor Arts College dancers, Taekwondo and gymnastics displays.

Sarah added: “Along with the familiar family entertainments, traders, food stalls and licensed bar, this year’s event is set to be our best ever.

“We are always seeking sponsors for this event so, if you would like to get involved in any way, please get in touch.”
