A HUSBAND and wife team are preparing for a trip to help the people at the heart of war torn Afghanistan.

Dentist Sara Banuri admits she is scared about taking the one-month trip to the violence-stricken capital Kabul, which continues to live with the threat of suicide bombers.

The Weymouth-based dentist will put her life and liberty at risk to help her father’s homeland by administering aid to Afghans dying of dental problems. The 34-year-old, who recently moved to Weymouth from Denmark, said: “Of course I’m scared but I will take measures and be more careful to dress like them.

“I might get hurt but it could also happen here, I could be hit by a car crossing the road so I will take my chances.

“I want to help people , it will one month to me, but it will mean a lot to them. It’s a good feeling you are making good things for people who need it.”

Mrs Banuri will be travelling with her Afghanistan-born husband, Rahim, 39, who will act as a bodyguard and translator.

The pair, who are travelling independently of an organisation, will be spending £10,000 of their own money on the trip which starts on August 12.

The mother of two hopes to return to her Weymouth practice a better dentist by treating diseases she has only previously read about.

The DK Dental and Laboratory owner said: “People with tooth ache are dying. Some have big abscesses which can go to the blood stream and there’s no treatment because the people are so poor and don’t have good food and vitamins.

The dentist’s dad was from Afghanistan but she has only visited the Middle Eastern country once in 2005, just after the Taliban were ousted.

Mr Banuri, 39, said: “I’m not really looking forward to going back, it’s more important for my children. I have a wife and children and this is important for their future and for my wife’s so she can experience the country. I’m doing it to support Sara.”
