AWARD-WINNING musicians will be visiting Weymouth today for the first time in almost 20 years.

The Lions Youth Brass is touring the south coast until Wednesday and will be providing free concerts at local venues.

Members of the public will be able to enjoy open-air performances at locations across South Dorset including Bowleaze Cove, Freshwater Caravan Park, Easton Gardens, Greenhill Gardens, Hive Beach and Hope Square.

The young musicians, who are based in South Cheshire, will also be holding indoor concerts at the Dorford Centre and the Hotel Prince Regent.

Richard Burgess, of the Weymouth and Portland Lions Club, volunteered to arrange accommodation and concert venues for the three-day visit.

Mr Burgess, who has organised several of the club’s previous fundraising events, said: “Many people said it would be impossible to arrange this event in less than a month but I said nothing’s impossible.”

For the past 19 years, the Lions Youth Brass has embarked on an annual summer tour but the band has not visited Weymouth since 1993 and 1994.

Mr Burgess added: “We chose locations across the area so there are opportunities for most people to listen to the band and make a small contribution towards good causes.

“The funds raised from the free concerts will either be spent on individuals with disadvantages or on community projects in the local area. In March, the Lions Club helped to fund two all-terrain wheelchairs that will enable disabled people to enjoy Weymouth beach.”
