CENTENARIAN Gwen Spicer went back to school to celebrate her special day.

The resident of Maiden Castle House care home in Dorchester marked her 100th birthday with a trip to Moreton Tea Rooms.

The tea rooms’ building was formerly Moreton School, where Gwen was educated 95 years ago.

Gwen, who went to Moreton School from the age of five to 14 before taking an apprenticeship in dress making, said returning to the school was an emotional experience.

She said: “It’s nice to see it, I never thought I would be coming back at 100.”

As well as the tea rooms, Gwen’s birthday outing also included a trip to Lawrence of Arabia’s cottage at Clouds Hill, her brother having gone to the pictures with Lawrence as a youngster, and a visit to Moreton Church.

She also went through Wool, where she lived for 25 years after getting married, and took her telegram from the Queen along with her on her travels.

Gwen, who has lived in the area her entire life, said: “I’m having a lovely day, I’ve been all down memory lane.”

After her big day out, Gwen returned to her Dorchester care home to celebrate her birthday with her family.

She has three sons, nine grandchildren and 11 great grandchildren.

Activities organiser at Maiden Castle House Jenny Webster said she wanted to thank Bob’s Cars for arranging the transport for the day and their special treatment for Gwen.

She said: “They decorated the bus for us and bought a lovely bouquet of flowers. They have been wonderful and made the day what it was.

“Without them we couldn’t have done this.”
