THE Westwind II cargo ship is in the process of being inspected by the Maritime and Coastguard Agency in Portland Port after a number of regulations were found to be deficient on board.

It comes after coastguards were called to recover the cargo vessel last week when it ran aground.

The ship began dragging her anchor in high winds and ran aground on the north east breakwater of Portland Harbour with 11 crew members on board on the night of Monday, October 19.

As the vessel drifted towards the breakwater it caused some disruption to a nearby mussel farm.

The empty cargo ship had arrived at Portland to take on fuel earlier this month but was detained by the Maritime Coastguard Agency (MCA).

Under the regulations on The Paris Memor-andum of Understanding on Port State Control the ship has been detained in Portland Port.

It had at one stage earlier been found to have 35 decencies whilst at a port in France.

International Convention for the Safety of Life at Sea (SOLAS) and Paris MOU require that certain certificates are held by such ships.

During the recent inspection it was found that a large number of such certificates were not present and so the ship has been detained until the owners, believed to be a German company, can comply with the current international maritime regulations.
