PLANS to bring back Portland Carnival in time for the borough's Olympic year have been scrapped.

The Portland Carnival Committee has issued a statement saying that the event is being postponed until 2013.

A committee spokesman said: "Portland Carnival Committee are committed to providing a carnival that the Island can be proud of.

"We’ve made the decision to delay such event until 2013 - but don’t worry, it will give us more time to organise, get people and local partners on board, making it bigger and better than the planned 2012 Carnival."

He added: "2012 is such a busy year already with national and international events, we believe that having the Carnival in 2013 will allow all aspects of the community to get together and have a good time once again.

"Ensuring Portlanders are at the heart of this Island wide event.

"We welcome anyone with experience, time or skills to join us in January 2012 when we resume our meetings.

"Thank you for your understanding."
