TRIPLE Olympic gold medallist Ben Ainslie and Weymouth’s Olympic champion Paul Goodison are backing a new mobile application that aims to help the public an insight into sailing.

Team Volvo for Life sailors who launched the new Volvo Sailing App at an event in London’s Covent Garden.

The application, which can be downloaded onto iPhone and iPad, is designed to help people understand more about Britain's most successful event at three of the last four Olympic Games.

Features include the ‘Walk the Course’ area with Goodison, who takes you step by step around an Olympic sailing course from start to finish.

Instructional videos include starting, the points of sail, mark rounding and right of way rules.

‘My Class’ pages give detailed information on the sailors' boats of choice while the ‘Sailing Toolbox’ contains top tips and expert advice from the sailors who know best.

Paralympics

A FUNDRAISING sweepstake for the Rugby World Cup Final is boosting the disabled sailing charity Sailability and two Paralympian athletes, Alex Rickham and Niki Birrell.

The funds raised will be used to buy equipment for Portlanders Alex and Niki to use during the Paralympic Games and will then be used by Sailability after the games to help empower and develop the self-confidence of people with disabilities by participating in sailing.

Prizes include a night for two at Threadneedles Hotel in central London, a seasonal dinner party for six prepared by Well Seasoned, ties and shirts from Turnbull & Asser, Harvie Hudson and Roderick Charles, a magnum of champagne from Berry Bros, a bottle of whiskey signed by David Cameron, a bag from apatchy, food and wine from the Parson’s Nose butchers, Oliver Bonas vouchers, Arsenal tickets and more.

Volunteers

YOUNG Games Makers are required to volunteer and be part of the Weymouth and Portland sailing events during Olympic Games.

The London Organising Committee (LOCOG) is calling on local teams of dedicated and passionate 16 to 18 year olds to apply to be Young Games Makers to volunteer at the home Games.

Organisations have until midnight on Monday, October 31 2011 to apply on behalf of their team for Technology Print Distribution Team Member roles, which cover the critical timing, scoring and results service for the competitions.

It means the Young Games Makers will be among the first to find out the official outcomes of each event and will be responsible for distributing them to key individuals around the venue. LOCOG requires teams of seven young people, with two Team Leaders who can display good communication skills and a friendly, outgoing manner; an ability to problem solve and perform under pressure.

Team leaders such as teachers, coaches and youth group leaders from organisations such as sports clubs, volunteering organisations, youth clubs and schools and colleges can apply on behalf of their young people at www.london2012.com/young-games-maker Schools and colleges wishing to submit a team application need to join the Get Set network www.london2012.com/getset

Olympic jobs

TENS of thousands of jobs are on offer in the run up to the 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games.

The London Organising Committee (LOCOG) is urging people to consider, research and apply for the many jobs that will become available between now and Games time and not to miss out on the opportunity of a lifetime.

By Games time, London 2012 will have a workforce of around 6,000 paid staff, up to 70,000 volunteers and around 100,000 paid contractors.

Tens of thousands of contractor opportunities and around 4,000 roles with LOCOG will become available over the next six months, including 350 jobs linked to the London 2012 Ceremonies company.
