It is staggering to read (Echo, October 25) that in these cash-strapped times public-funded bodies, like the Arts Council and Dorset County Council, are still happy to recklessly spend £335,405 of taxpayers’ money on projects like the Jurassic Stones sculpture.

A piece of work that, despite the artist’s optimistic interpretation, looks more like a National Health Service warning against using cotton buds to remove wax from the ear or, alternatively, a satirical and self-deprecating comment on the thinking behind the scheme.

Or, appropriately, ostriches with their heads in the sand.

In times to come, when the present financial crisis really starts to bite and public services really start suffering, I just hope that anyone who can still afford to drive past the Jurassic stones will spare a moment to remember just how much the rocks cost and consider how that money could have been better spent.
