A TROUPE of majorettes has given an audience a twirl in honour of their first anniversary.

The Ruby Twirler Majorettes of Weymouth wowed a crowd of parents and friends during a display and medal ceremony at St Edmund’s Church in Lanehouse, Weymouth.

The troupe was established by Carole Didcock last year.

The Ruby Twirlers are made up of more than 20 baton twirlers aged between five and 12.

Portland Town councillor Sandy West presented the twirlers with commemorative medals to mark the occasion.

She even had a go at twirling a baton herself.

Coun West said: “I was delighted to be asked along to the evening. The children worked really well as a team and I was very impressed by their ability.

“It is definitely not an easy sport, but they were teaching me how to twirl the baton and it was great fun.

“The group is a good community scheme, which keeps the children healthy and active. It was not just girls – boys and parents were joining in too.”

The Ruby Twirlers, who have previously completed a sponsored baton twirl, had been practising to impress parents and visitors attending the celebration.

They gave a demonstration of the skills they have learned over the last year.

The participants later encouraged the audience of parents and friends to join in with the activities and learn some twirling themselves.

The majorette classes, which take place on Friday evenings at the church, welcome girls and boys aged 16 years and below.

The twirlers are always keen for new members to join. Call 01305 830278 for information.
