FUNDRAISERS from across the area have danced, dressed up and even waxed themselves pink in support of Breast Cancer Awareness.

Staff at Elegance Hair and Beauty, Littlemoor Shopping Centre, Weymouth, dressed in pink before offering customers themed beauty treatments on Friday, October 28.

The salon celebrated its biggest ever fundraising total of £550.

Salon owner Sonia Fraga said: “We ran it like a normal day but we had special things going on throughout it.

“Customers could get their nails painted pink for a £3 donation. We’re very pleased to have raised this much.”

Andrea Gibbs, from Sue Ryder next door, which teamed up with the salon said: “We dressed up and encouraged everyone to take part. Our charity looks after people with long term illness and as cancer is that type of illness, we fully supported this day.”

Tony Brindley, AD Brindley fruit and veg shop’s owner, turned his skin pink and raised £307 when he had a chest wax at the salon.

He said: “Cancer affects so many people and it’s important to raise as much money as possible. It’s also important to encourage others to do all they can.”

More than 50 Weymouth women used their keep-fit routine to help raise funds by taking part in a sponsored Zumba class on Saturday.

Some brought their children along to the event at Redland Community Sports Hub, Dorchester Road, which raised £500.

Zumba instructor Emma Harvey, who organised the class, said: “It was a nationwide event and I decided to organise something in Weymouth.

“Most of those that took part were the usual Zumba crowd but we did have some people who had heard and just wanted to take part.

“I had three other instructors helping with routines, which mixed it up a bit and made it more fun..”

Staff at The Edge salon, Mellstock Avenue, Dorchester dressed in pink and played games to raise money.

Junior hairstylist Katie Fearnley said: “We have raised £36 so far and we’re still trying to raise money.”
