I was most interested to read Roy Child’s letter regarding Robbie Burns and William Barnes (Have Your Say, February 6).
I can assure Mr Child, and your readership that the William Barnes Society (established 1983) continues to attract members, and provide a full programme of events each year in addition to publishing an excellent newsletter twice yearly.

Meanwhile our chairman Dr Alan Chedzoy’s excellent biography, The People’s Poet – William Barnes of Dorset, has received much critical acclaim. Outside the society, the Thomas Hardy Society and the Dorchester Town Council acknowledge Hardy’s great friend and mentor by laying a wreath at the statue outside St Peter’s Church during the Hardy birthday celebrations on the first Saturday in June each year.
The Church Conservation Trust who care for both Winterborne Came Church, and Whitcombe Church, which Barnes served so faithfully over many years, are about to publish a leaflet with advice and information of how to reach these two havens of peace and tranquillity via footpaths from the town.
So I’m sure you will realise to quote from the great man’s own words: But still, wi’ vo’k a-left behind He’ll always be a-kept in mind
Brian Caddy Hon Treasurer William Barnes Society Dorchester
