FICTION came to life as favourite characters descended on schools and shops for World Book Day.

The celebration of authors, illustrators and reading had its 15th year across the county yesterday.

Robin Hood, princesses and a dozen Harry Potters descended on St Nicholas and St Laurence Primary School in Weymouth.

School librarian Denise Caves, who dressed as a witch, said: “The children loved dressing up.

“We had a book swap where all the children brought in a book and we laid them all on a table so they could pick up a new one.

“I’ve had three carrier bags of books also donated to the library by parents.

“This day has given emphasis on the important link between parenting and schools.

“We do everything we can to encourage parents to get involved with their child’s reading.”

In the afternoon there was a parade as the children showed off their outfits and the best dressed were chosen.

Children and staff at Sunny Days Nursery in Poundbury also dressed up and had some book-related fun.

Lucy Benham, of Sunny Days, said: “We took the children on ‘a bear hunt’ outside which they really loved.”

In Dorchester young readers got a chance to meet their favourite local authors and take part in activities at Waterstones.

Kit Berry, John Chapman, Gill Lewis and Ron Dawson dropped in to sign copies of their books and meet fans.

Harrison McKee, aged eight, said: “I really like reading. The Scary Bones books are great because they’re set in places that I know.

“I was really excited to meet Ron Dawson and have him sign my book.”

Mr Dawson, author of the Scary Bones series, said: “This is what makes being a writer worthwhile.”
