PETS had a lucky escape after a fire in a Weymouth bungalow.

Two Dorset Fire and Rescue crews were called to the blaze at a property on the corner of Dorchester Road and Icen Road last night.

A pensioner who lives in the bungalow was not home when the fire started, watch manager David Allan said.

He added: “A neighbour went in to see if they could help the lady but she was out.

“There were some budgies and a cat in the house but they were taken out and seem to be OK.

“The fire was confined to the kitchen. It has caused some smoke damage and the kitchen is being ventilated.

“We don’t know what caused it yet.”

Fire crews received a 999 call at 6.41pm. Firefighters used two breathing apparatus to enter the bungalow.

A South Western Ambulance crew was also called to the scene and precautionary smoke inhalation treatment was given to the neighbour.
