OVER 50s will be showing the world their dancing skills during the Olympics.

Six Dorset groups of the A Dance A Day project are limbering up to perform at the Weymouth Clock Tower during the events.

The dance project launched last summer with the aim of encouraging adults to get active through dance.

Producer Rosalind Conlon said: “One of the prime factors of the classes is to create dances to be performed during the Olympics.

“The main reason for this idea is that there would be a lot of opportunities for younger people to do something for the event so I wanted to make sure that older people would get that opportunity too.

“Just because you’re older doesn’t mean you give up. You still have ambitions and things that you want to achieve.

“The groups have weekly classes where they work with their dance instructor to create movement based exercises that they can do at home.

“It’s little things that can get exercise into their daily life and up physical activity levels.”

The project is managed by Activate Performing Arts, the theatre and dance development agency for Dorset.

Led by qualified dance practitioners, each session encourages creative movement, improving fitness and meeting new people as well as the opportunity to devise a personalised dance programme to keep you moving throughout the week.

Dancer June Elliott Thomas said: “We all leave with huge smiles on our faces and we’ve become a closely knit group of friends.

“Everyone responds to the total joy which dance brings and it is the most wonderful thing that Dance A Day was created and all we oldies are having the time of our lives. Thank you all for this glorious opportunity to experience what it is like to be a dancer.”
