UNIFORMS that will be worn by an 800-strong group of borough volunteers during the London 2012 Olympic sailing events have been unveiled.

Two volunteers who were among the first to step forward to be Weymouth and Portland Ambassadors were chosen to model the purple and pink look.

The uniforms, which are being launched across the UK, will be worn by 12,000 ambassador volunteers at all Olympic and Paralympic venues.

They have been designed to reflect the ‘look and feel’ of the Games but local logos have been added for the team in Weymouth and Portland.

So far 500 people have been recruited to provide the welcoming smile, give information and offer advice to visitors at key locations during our 2012 celebrations and a second recruitment phase for 300 more is under way.

Each ambassador will be given two polo shirts, a fleece, weather proof jacket, reusable water bottle and a back pack.

Tessa Kerry, 58, from Bland-ford Forum, said: “This is a once in a lifetime event and I wanted to be part of it.

“Hosting the Olympics has brought out a pride in me I never knew I had.

“I’m looking forward to meeting people from all over the world and showing off our beautiful county with all its hidden gems.

“I’m thrilled with the uniforms we will be wearing and think they look wonderful. My son has already said he wants it but I’m going to hold on to it tightly!”

Councillor Howard Legg, borough council spokesman for partnerships and special projects, said: “The new uniforms look fantastic and will help our team of ambassadors really stand out from the crowd.

“We have been so impressed with the quality of our volunteers and we couldn’t ask for a better team to welcome visitors to Weymouth and Portland.”

Cameron Avant, a student at All Saints school in Wyke Regis, said: “The Olympics are a huge event and volunteering is something really exciting and different to do over the summer.

“I go and see rugby games but I’ve never been to a sporting event like this so I’m really looking forward to being involved.”

The 16-year-old added: “I’m a bit nervous but it will be great to meet new people and a few of my friends from school are also volunteering.

“My family are really proud of me and looking forward to seeing me in my uniform!”

The uniforms have been designed and manufactured within strict sustainable guidelines and have been produced in collaboration between London Organising Committee (LOCOG), the Greater London Authority, Weymouth and Portla
