THANKS to a grant of £49,100 from the Heritage Lottery Fund, the Jurassic Coast Earth Festival 2012 is putting on a ‘rock’ festival being launched in Lyme Regis.

From May to September at venues along the 95 miles of Jurassic Coast from Exmouth to Studland Bay, towns and communities will be participating in and enjoying a wide range of events to celebrate England’s only natural World Heritage Site.

The festival will combine art, music, earth science and history.

The Heritage Lottery Fund’s acting head of South West, Richard Bellamy, said: “We are delighted to be able to support the Jurassic Coast Earth Festival in the year when the Olympic and Paralympic sailing and wind-surfing events will provide the opportunity for the world to gain a greater appreciation for this stunning coastline.”

The Earth Festival has been given UNESCO patronage for the way it is bringing together education, science and culture.

The festival begins in Lyme Regis with a weekend of events from May 4 to 6 including the Fossil Festival which will incorporate the digital programme Collaborative Curiosity, which maps geology through technology, the Inspire-marked life-sized animated Pliosaur puppet, the flight with the dinosaurs in the Jurassic Airlines flight simulator and A Celebration of Time performed by Robyn Hitchcock and John Hegley. Westbay will be running Jurassic Coast Activity Days from August 14 to 16 which will take the form of a mini-fossil festival and include art events.
