THE streets that the Olympic Flame will travel along in advance of the 2012 Games are revealed today.

And the inspirational local heroes chosen to carry the torch through Dorset have also been confirmed.

The street-level route and times for the relay have been unveiled by the London Organising Committee of the Olympic and Paralympic Games (LOCOG).

Crowds are being encouraged to line the route and gather at key ‘celebration points’ to cheer the torchbearers on.

Among those confirmed for the prestigious role are the borough council-nominated Ryan Hope of Westham in Weymouth and Wey Valley School and Sports College student Tom Mules.

Tom, 16, was nominated for his sporting prowess with the Tornadoes of South Dorset on Portland and his voluntary coaching work with the club and local schools.

He said: “I won the nationals in 2008 and was really close to getting a GB trial for the Olympics last November but then I snapped my cruciate ligament skiing and couldn’t compete.

“I was feeling a bit down but then I got the torchbearer email and it cheered me up.

“I’m looking forward to it.

“Hopefully, lots of people will come out and cheer me on.”

Chairman of Westham Comm-unity Group Ryan, 20, who works at Weymouth’s FGP Precision Engineering, said: “I was surprised to be nominated and by so many people.

“About four members of the public nominated me as well as the council so I was quite pleased. It will be an honour.

“It’s good to be representing a deprived area.

“I think Weymouth is going to be buzzing, hopefully with a real sense of pride.

“After everything the town has been put through for the Olympics hopefully this will be the start of the Olympics benefiting the town.”

Last November, LOCOG announced that more than 40 communities across Dorset will experience the spectacle of the Olympic Flame on Thursday, July 12, and Friday, July 13.

Now it has been revealed that the flame will travel through West Dorset to reach Chickerell at around 6pm and pass through Wyke Regis to the sailing academy on Portland for a celebration event at 6.42pm.

From there the Olympic Flame will travel by sea to Weymouth Beach, arriving at 7.20pm for a free two-and-a half hour evening show presented by Weymouth and Portland Borough Council, LOCOG and three relay sponsors Coca Cola, Lloyds TSB and Samsung.

On Friday, July 13, the flame will start at Portland Bill at 7.05am and travel across the borough to Hope Square for 8.49am.

It will then progress along Weymouth Esplanade, through Preston and Osmington to east Dorset where another official evening show – one of just 66 across the country – will be hosted on Bournemouth Beach.

More details about Wey-mouth’s evening celebration will be released soon.
