A COUPLE who first met in their prams have just celebrated their 70th wedding anniversary.

Peter and Dora Hutchings, both 91, from Preston, met on the Esplanade when they were being pushed in their prams.

Mr Hutchings said: “As far as I know our nannies used to take us out in the pram. Our parents worked. I reckon we met in the pram.”

Their parents were friends and years later they met roller skating down Weymouth Esplanade.

They were married at St Andrew’s Church in Preston in 1942 and celebrated their 70th anniversary on March 9.

After the Second World War, Mrs Hutchings worked in her father’s business in a general grocers and Mr Hutchings was a ladies hairdresser and worked with his father. They lived on Preston Road, before moving to Greenhill and then back to Preston.

They had a daughter and a son, Edwina and Terry, who came to see them on their anniversary, together with other family members.

Mr Hutchings said: “Our son and daughter took us out to lunch with some friends.”

The couple said they loved card games and have domino nights.

Mrs Hutchings used to take dance classes and play golf and was in the Inner Wheel, while Mr Hutchings was in the Rotary Club and enjoyed gardening and bird watching. The couple said that a sense of humour was important.
