AN estimated 900 people turned out to support and enjoy Portland Rotary’s Plant and Crafts Fair at the Grove Road playing field.

Brilliant sunshine added to the mood of this first big open-air event of the island’s season and brisk business was enjoyed at all the trade and charity stalls where, in particular, plants were snapped up to brighten gardens in the coming months.

Entertainment was provided by TS Penn Band, 2nd Edition Majorettes, children’s entertainers Jingles and Sparkles and there were ponies from Windmill Stables for rides for the youngsters.

A major attraction for children was the workshop run by Hannah Sofaer from Portland Stone and Quarry Trust. Welephant from Dorset Fire and Rescue Service was also on hand to show people around a fire engine.

The 2nd Portland Scouts did a splendid job in guiding people to the car parking area provided by Albion Stone and Portland United Football Club.

Mrs Sarah Curtis, the main organiser of the event, was delighted with the outcome of the day which raised more than £2,000.

She said: “Donations will be made to charitable organisations present on the day and to good causes on the island.”
