It is not often I put pen to paper but I feel I must comment about the present and future development of my beloved Dorchester town.

I have lived in Dorchester all my life. I have witnessed local councillors come and go over the years, with many individuals trying to implement their political status and ideas on our town.

Not so long ago Dorset County, West Dorset District and Dorchester Town councils were served by ladies and gentleman – a majority of whom had the respect of the town’s people.

They were honest, sincere and helpful people and we were all aware of which political flag they represented.

I feel sure, or so the voting leaflets tell me, that the present local authorities still have many honest and sincere people in public service with the best interests of the town at heart.

My point is how on earth would anyone with common sense vote over some of the Airfix model kit designs of buildings springing up all over my beloved town (and just outside)?

We have the Queen Mary Two being built in Charles Street car park. Or is it the flagship for the Olympic Games?

Who ever dreamed up this idea for a building? It certainly does not blend in with the rest of the buildings in this particular part of the town.

Please don’t attempt phase two because there will be no shoppers in Dorchester for the present businesses to survive on.

Makeshift car parks like the park-and-ride scheme at Dorchester Town Football Club site are not the answer for overspilled car parks in town.

The roads are not designed to cope with extra traffic – ask the people who drive into Dorchester to work and are held up at this roundabout continually from 5pm onwards on weekdays.

With the buildings that are being developed at the Brewery Square, does this mean that High West and South streets will have even more empty shops?

What about the building being developed by the southern railway line?

Make sure, residents, that you have ear plugs when the train passes by the building, and keep hold of the telly.

Seriously, it’s a nightmare design and totally out of character. We have model railway and fire station buildings at Poundbury, although these buildings are outside of Dorchester.

Whatever happened to our avenue of trees being promised from each road into the town just like the old days when the original trees were chopped down? Can anyone tell me: Why are our present local authorities so intent to destroy our once lovely market town with monster buildings?

Could we not have (if we really need new premises) more modest buildings which blend in with the town?
