A RACE around Weymouth Bay by a fleet of spectacular vessels has been cancelled due to forecast gales.
The fleet of 14 vessels, which have just completed the London to Portland Small Tall Ships Race, were scheduled to race in the borough tomorrow.
But Weymouth and Portland Sailing Academy chief executive John Tweed said due to gale forecasts Saturday's race had been called off.
The spectacle, which had intended to begin with canon fire from Nothe Fort by the Lord Lieutenant of Dorset, Mrs Anthony Pitt-Rivers, will not be taking place.
Race director Colonel Ron Dadswell said: "It could be gusting up to 50 knots and with young crews on board, safety has to come first."
