The RNLI is holding a public open day to unveil plans for a new £11.2million lifeboat building and maintenance facility at its Poole headquarters.
The charity is showcasing preliminary designs and layouts for the building at the RNLI College, West Quay Road, on Thursday.
The aim is to bring production and maintenance of all-weather lifeboats in-house – which should save the RNLI £3.7 million every year, and create 90 new jobs.
Subject to planning approval the works will start next year for completion by 2014.
The RNLI’s head of construction and maintenance, Angus Watson said: “We aim to submit a formal planning application for the new lifeboat building and maintenance facility in the coming weeks and the public can interact with the process in the usual way.
“We wanted to share our plans and give neighbours a chance to see our proposals.”
