The A354 Weymouth Way was opened in July 1987 and has had relatively few safety issues.

The Coroner has now ruled the tragic death that occurred in March 2012, adjacent to a track leading from Goldcroft Avenue, as accidental.

The previous fatality, also a pedestrian, was in August 2003 when a young man who was registered blind ran died in the vicinity of the Spa Road flyover.

There are numerous historical rights of way and shortcuts that give pedestrian access from Southill and Westham to the western edge of Radipole Lake Nature Reserve.

All require crossing Weymouth Way at uncontrolled points with the exception of the underpass at the southern end near Swannery Bridge.

Installing pedestrian crossings at these many locations would be impractical and negate the purpose of the bypass.

Installing a limited number would assist few and human nature being what it is would result in the many still crossing at random points.

If people regard this road as dangerous for pedestrians then the solution is to fence off the entire western edge of the nature reserve and for access to be limited to the southern underpass and via the visitors’ centre on Radipole Park Drive.
