Police are appealing for witnesses after a hit and run left a car engulfed in flames at a service station.

Officers received a call reporting a car on fire at Long Ash Service Station, near Dorchester.

A Dorset Police spokesman said: “The fire was believed to have been started when the car was involved in a road traffic collision. We are treating this as a fail to stop incident.

“There are no details about the other vehicle at this time and we are appealing for anyone with information to get in contact.”

The blazing vehicle, a grey Peugeot 307 registered to a man from Glamorgan, Wales, was thought to have been stationary when it was hit.

Dorset Fire and Rescue Service received several 999 calls reporting the car fire.

Fire crew attended the scene just before 10pm on Monday.

A spokesman for the service said: “The fire is thought to have been caused by another vehicle hitting it but we do not have any further information on this.

“There was severe fire damage to the vehicle.”
