PUPILS galloped into the Wild West at Chickerell Primary Academy with a cowboy showdown.

Children at the Weymouth school learnt about American history and culture in a cowboy and Indian themed project.

Year Three classes showed off their moves in a dance routine for their parents and had fun doing cowboy moves and Native American dancing.

Mums and dads packed into the hall and enjoyed watching the performance.

After the dancing the children sang Three Wheels on my Wagon and took their families on a tour of their Wild West Museum, which was filled with artefacts they had made.

Year Three leader Kate Muncie said her class and their parents had all enjoyed learning about America.

She said: “This has been a fantastic project – all the children have really got into it.

“The Wild West Showdown day has been an opportunity to bring our learning together and to celebrate our achievements with our parents.

“We did a home project where the children made artefacts which the parents have been really enjoying.

“It’s great to have a lot of parents to see the dance performances and singing.”

The youngsters and their teachers were all dressed for the occasion as either cowboys or Native American Indians and the class even had a wigwam.

Pupils said they enjoyed making their costumes and working together to learn the dance routine.

Parents also had a thumping-good time and said it is great to see their children having so much fun learning.

Year Three teacher Kate Muncie has worked at Chickerell Primary Academy for four years.

She said: “I started in reception and have been with year three for two years now which I love. My parents were both teachers so I grew up surrounded by it.”

Miss Muncie studied at UEA in Norwich before completing her PGCE with the Dorset Teacher Training Partnership.

She said: “I love all the creativity and how interesting the kids are, hearing all the funny things they tell you about their day is great.”
