A CHAPLAIN working for HM Prison Service on Portland has been announced as one of four new Canons to join Salisbury Cathedral’s College of Canons.
The Revd Bill Cave, who currently works at the Immigration Removal Centre at The Verne, will be installed as a Non-Residentiary Canon next month.
The Revd Cave joined the prison service as a chaplain in 1995. He came to Dorset in 1997 to take up the post of chaplain at HMP The Weare, a prison ship in Portland Harbour. He has been Church of England chaplain at The Verne since 2006.
He’ll join the Ven Peter Eagles QHC, deputy chaplain general and archdeacon for the British Army, and the Revd Canon Dr James Woodward, principal of Sarum College.
Meanwhile, Chris Corteen, chair of the House of Laity in Salisbury Diocese, will be installed as a Lay Canon.
All four of the new Canons will be expected to play an important role in the life of the Cathedral.
The College of Canons meets twice a year, providing feedback to the Cathedral on its activities whilst informing policy decisions of the Cathedral’s governing body.
The College also gives the Cathedral a chance to further its role in the wider diocesan and civic life within Dorset and Wiltshire.
Each Canon will be allocated their own stall in the Quire of the Cathedral. The Revd Bill Cave is to be installed in Grimston whilst Chris Corteen will be installed in Dorchester.
The Revd Canon Dr James Woodward will be installed into Durnford and the Ven Peter Eagles will be installed in Bricklesworth.
The Very Revd June Osborne, Dean of Salisbury, said: “We are delighted to welcome the new Canons, each of whom offers specialisms that are particularly relevant to current events.
“Their insights will enrich the Cathedral, as will their advice and opinion.
“We are thankful for the service the College of Canons as a whole provides. Access to the knowledge held collectively by members of the College offers the Cathedral a depth of understanding and expertise with which it can address issues faced by the Cathedral itself and the wider church.”
All of the new Canons will be welcomed to the Cathedral during Evensong on Thursday, October 15, beginning at 5.30pm.
